Joseph Richard Stone [st.1.5.4]

Joseph Richard Stone was the fourth child of James Stone & Mary Ann Sutton born at Gun Lane & christened July 10th, 1853 at Christ Church, West Bromwich.

In 1861 the family were living in Parker St, Bradford, Manchester, Lancs & Joseph  had 3 brothers.

By 1871 the family had returned to Staffordshire & were living in the High St, Tunstall, Wolstanton. Joseph & his brother James were all iron workers like their father. Joseph now had 3 sisters,  Esther (8), Rachael (4) & Catherine (3).

Joseph married Ann Lynch in Jan-March 1873 at Sneyd Holy Trinity, Burslem, Staffs.  Ann was born Jan-March 1852 at Burslem,  the daughter of Mary Ann  Abbotts & John Lynch, a nail maker.  In 1871 Ann was living with her parents at Bag St, Burslem & working as a potter transferer. 

In 1881 Joseph & Ann were living at 19 Auckland St, Pendleton, Salford & Joseph was an iron puddler.  They had 5 children by this time – James (8), Mary Ann (6), Timothy (4), Joseph (2) & John David (1 month).

By 1891 they had moved to 16 Egerton St, Pendleton & Joseph was now described as an iron worker.  They now had 8 children at home – James, an iron worker, Mary A, a cotton winder, Timothy, a cotton tender,  Joseph R, John D, Rebecca (7), all at school, Annie (3) & Emma (2).

Son James married Ruth Briggs on June 5th, 1897 at St George, Charlestown, Salford.  On August 21st of that year James & Ruth were witnesses at the marriage of his sister Mary Ann to Henry Collins, a calico stiffener in the bleach works, at the same church.  James & Ruth had a daughter Rhoda in 1898; however sadly James died, aged 26, in 1899.  Widowed Ruth remarried in 1900, her second husband being James William Clough, a publican.

Joseph & Ann were still living at Egerton St in 1901 & Joseph was now a stoker at refuse des.....?  Still at home were Timothy, a cloth dyer, Joseph, a labourer at the dye works, John D, a cloth dyer, Rebecca, a cotton winder at Colton Hill, Annie, a cotton weaver’s helper, Emma & Florence (9).

Joseph died in April-June 1905, aged 52, his death being registered at Salford.

Son John David married Sarah Ellen Shaw in July-September 1907 at Salford, & in 1911 they were living at Chorley, Lancs with their 1 year old daughter Hilda. John was a packer in the bleach factory &  sadly he died 3 years later, aged 33, in Chorley.

Daughter Annie married Thomas Reid, a railway servant born in Belfast, Ireland, in Oct-December 1909 at Salford.

In 1911 widowed Ann & 4 of her children were living at 23 Harwood St, Pendleton.  Son Timothy was an out of work dyer, & the 3 daughters Rebecca, Emma & Florence (Florrie) were all cotton winders.  It was noted on the census that Ann & Joseph had had 11 children, 9 of whom were still alive.

The 1939 register shows daughter Annie & husband Thomas Reid & their family living at 16 Brunel St, Salford & Thomas was a railway stableman. In 1939 daughters Rebecca & Florence living together at 14 Ashton St, Salford.  Rebecca was a cotton hank winder & Florence was a cotton drawer off.  Daughter Emma was working as a cook in 1939 for Thomas Heyworth & family, a solicitor.  She was living at The Grange, Knutsford Rd, MacclesfieldDaughters Emma & Florence were to remain spinsters, Emma outliving Florence as she was granted probate of Florence’s estate in 1959.
